Ben, more suggestions:

Would suggest you trap the OnConnect for your client socket, and maybe busy-out the cursor in the mean-time. Then when the connect returns in OnConnect(), can display a relevant messagebox.

I quickly added this to my copy of IM and i'm getting this:

"The socket operation was attempted to an un-reachable host"

i had already changed the IP to "68.10.55.161"

I just posted a new version of the client. I think this fixes the status change problem.

I also double-checked the destination ip address Wink

Let me see if I can do what you're suggesting...

One moment please...

That works great. Very helpful as I couldn't figure out how to tell if I ever connected or not. Plus I can see the error messages.

I'm going to send you a personal message shortly so you can see if you can make a connection to my firewall where the server is running.

We'll go from there.

I would change your cursor back like this:

$FORM.CURSOR = 0

else, the size-grip on the resizable form doesn't work correctly.

More two cents (you did ask for feedback! :0) )

I would like to see IM startup more like MSN, it starts not in the taskbar, but as a normal window ... plus, would suggest it not try to connect straight away, but have a connect button or menu-item. The user could then minimize to the tray if needed.

I would have a normal Exit menu-item in the file menu as well. And the Logout menuitem would simply take the user off-line. It's not "intuitive" that logout means exit the program (my two cents)

Good points Shawn. I need some of this functionality for my work, but I'll add these suggestions as options so it can be configured to work best for the user. I'll also change the logout to an exit and add a disconnect option.

Did you ever get connected successfully?

I am signed onto that server now.

Any idea if your outbound traffic is restricted? If so, maybe we can try a different port for the server.

I might as well make it port 21 as most companies let that traffic out.

***SLEEP 60***

OK, I changed the port number to 21. Let's give it another go.

shawn&bonji, you can set how MSN opens up and I set it to start windowless.
that's the best.

but, bonji's disappearing window when it looses focus (not sure if you already fixed that) is annoying.

oh, ja.
at least jose had no change connecting to me as his router denied outbound connections to 777.

What disappearing window are you referring to? I'm not aware that any window disappears after losing focus.

Now crashes on the other hand I am too familiar with.

Just popped in for a sec to say "i agree" jooel. These suggestions I think would be good default settings, for first-time startups of IM, especially in this "test" mode we're in - but once its going-good, things like auto-starting makes sense ... and Ben I agree, these things would make great "options".
