well, if we really wanna have msi...
I know, many of kf users do want it without any good reason.

anyways, now as it's there some improvements should be added:
    -s switch for silent mode
start menu program group that holds the chm, release notes and uninstall linky

and finally, as it's msi, the zip method of distribution might not be the right one.

I haven't tried it yet. Does it first uninstall the old DLL if one is registered? Does it leave an uninstall option in Add/Remove?

I couldn't read all it does as the messages don't stick but they just fly by.
but I remember seeing a flash of "removing backup" or something...
so, it seems to handle the "installation" via the over kill way.

what comes to add-remove, yes, it's there.
silly though, when I click on change (instead of remove) it actually brings it up and, on the modify screen, there is nothing but "mainfeature" object/block.
that's fine if there was such a thing when it was first installed in the beginning.
thus the modify screen is there just to bring confusion.
also, it says 0k as the size of that "mainfeature", which is wrong too.

shawnie, what comes to including the dll separately in the zip file, there is no use for that.
and like said before, there is no need for the zip itself either.

msi is a package.
it can hold all the peaces and packaging softwares are able to "unpackage" it just fine like any other package.

well, here's my thinking on this. The MSI is supposed to be an value-added thing - available to those that want to distribute the DLL via GPO's or whatever, and I don't think one would want start menu items and CHM files and example scripts deposited on "client machines" with this (imho)

I'm not dimissing this idea though, let me think about - opinions welcome.

Shawn,
I agree with you that I don't want .chm's or sample scripts installed on all my machines, but if it were an option we could choose and configure for GPO's then it would be nice have it for the machines we use for design.

As far as the .dll goes, if we had command line switches for silent and default dir then we wouldn't need the .dll by its self, and that would reduce problems for beginners.

the point is that MSI provides methods for you to do both.
why not make msi that normally with -s switch installs only the dll?

if ran with gui, it defaults to chm and stuff on the start menu.

I think since it's an MSI, you can install it silent like this:

kixforms.msi /quiet

just do a /? to get the command-line args.

it does not cut it, anyways.
you would need to be able to do a simple admin install from commandline and then full install on both commandline and by gui.

the manual needs to be part of the installer.
that's no choice, otherwise the msi is just an joke.

Thanks man, no worries. Me and Jooel go way back. Jooel is just being ... well ... "Jooel". Look up the word "basta" in the dictionary. There's Jooel.

Yeah, that's what I think too. Let's differ between these things; KiXforms as a distribution package should be just that - just what's essentially needed for a deployment and making it work on client PC's, all users. As small as possible. Nothing else.

The script geeks and admins that has a use of the .chm won't use it either way.

What I DO miss though, is version information in add/remove programs Wink This could be useful for inventory applications/scripts etc.

Again, great work!
