I was looking for a new server for work and came up with a problem.
all the servers with the new 5100 series xeon processors only have slots for 2,5" drives Shocked

then found this video:
http://h10018.www1.hp.com/wwsolutions/misc/drives-enclosures/sas-hs2.wmv

saying, HP makes the transition to better smooth and fast.
well... it was a shock, nevertheless.

yeah, but there's still transition period for the ML-series etc Smile

The new SAS (Serial attached SCSI) bring up to 100% perfomance inrease in some measurements Smile

SAS, sure.
but was that tested with the 3,5 inch drives?

and no, ML series has no transition period.
just checked ML370 as an example.
if I want a processor on the system that was released this year, it means my only choice is server with only 2,5 inch drive support.

was looking at some manufacturers and dell doesn't seem to even have the newer xeon processors.

IBM on the other hand has 3,5" slots in the state-of-the-art-CPU systems.

Well I recently priced out some high end hi I/O servers for database from both HP and DELL

I really like HP myself, but the cost of 2 servers with 2003 Enterprise was about $110,000 from HP and about $80,000 from DELL

Not sure what HP is doing different on the pricing, but hard to sell $30,000 extra because "I like HP". Those holding the purse strings need a better answer than that.
